Project Statement
In the age when algorithms have become increasingly prominent in people’s daily lives, humanity and human judgment are gradually lost when algorithmic decision-making is developed to be more intellectual and automated. The Singularland is a design fiction that depicts a predictive scenario of a near future where human free will is monitored and in charge of an algorithm-governed authority. In the worldview of this project, people who suspect algorithmic decisions are seen as mentally disordered and need to be treated in a sanatorium called Singularland. A series of artifacts are designed to reflect the patient’s experience in Singularland. This project employs dark humour to visualize how automated algorithms control the public - aiming to draw attention to the risk of autocracy also the urgent need for algorithmic transparency and ethical algorithms.
